📚 George Underwood
George Underwood became Forster’s first schoolteacher when the school opened in 1870. The local historical account identifies him as a Cambridge graduate, bringing a university education to a small settlement developing around timber, shipping and fishing. His surviving public story is brief, but the connection is direct: he taught the town’s first school pupils. Education was one of the practical institutions that helped turn a working coastal settlement into a community where families could establish a more settled life.
